So, you are thinking of driving for Uber? Congratulations are in order, then! Uber is a great way to make a little additional cash, provided that you enjoy driving and that your car meets the minimum qualifications required to provide Uber service. That said, can you drive for Uber with a 2-door car?
If you have a sports car, such as a Lamborghini, then you may still drive for Uber with a 2-door vehicle through the Uber Lux service offering. For standard service, however, your vehicle will not meet Uber’s minimal requirements.
Today we’re going to explore the qualifications that you’ll need to meet in order to provide Uber service. Aside from standard service, there are premium offerings which you may or may not qualify for and we’ll detail the information that you need to know in order to determine if you can indeed drive for Uber.
Let’s start with the basic requirements for everyday Uber service.
What are the standard requirements for driving for Uber?
If you wish to provide your services as a driver for Uber then your vehicle needs to fit within the following profile:
- Your vehicle must be a car, minivan, or a truck and capable of seating 4 people (as well as the driver)
- Your vehicle also needs to be less than or exactly 15 years old.
- Your name needs to be on the insurance of the vehicle in order to provide service as well.
- Your vehicle needs to have a current inspection tag.
Aside from this, you will also need to pass a background check which Uber will be running on you and certain vehicles are going to be automatically disqualified. Your vehicle will not be approved if it is one of the following:
- A marked vehicle, such as a decommissioned police car, taxi, or delivery vehicle.
- A full-sized van.
- An overly-modified or rebuilt vehicle
Those are just the requirements for ‘standard’ Uber service but, as we’ve mentioned, Uber does has some premium offerings which you may be a good fit for, provided that your vehicle meets the specifications for them. Here are some popular offerings which Uber also provides:
- UberSUV and UberBLACK
Let’s take a closer look at what each offering requires in terms of your vehicle.
What are the UberSelect requirements?
UberSelect is considered more of a ‘luxury’ service and providing this service will require that your vehicle meets the following criteria:
- Your vehicle needs to have 4 seat belts and 4 doors.
- You must have a genuine leather interior.
- Your vehicle must be a 2007 model or newer.
What are the UberXL requirements?
UberXL is an Uber service dedicated to transporting more passengers than your standard Uber service. To qualify for providing UberXL service, your vehicle must be capable of holding 6 people, with a seatbelt present for each, and must also fit within the standard guidelines which have previously listed.
Vehicles such as the Honda Odyssey or the Dodge Caravan are good examples which meet this criterion.
What are the UberX requirements?
UberX is the next step up from the most basic and likely you will qualify for providing this service, as long as you have 4 doors and 4 seat belts. Example vehicles for UberX service include the Ford Focus and the Nissan Altima.
UberSUV and UberBLACK
Aside from Uber Lux, these are the most expensive Uber offerings available to it’s customers. To drive for UberSUV or UberBLACK your vehicle must meet the following requirements:
- Your vehicle must be in near-pristine condition.
- You’ll need airport permits for your city, commercial insurance, and commercial registration.
- Your vehicle must have a black exterior and a black leather interior.
- Your vehicle needs to be a 2012 model or newer.
Uber Lux is the one exception where you might get away with a 2-door vehicle. This will require a luxury model car which is less than 5 years old and the exterior must be black, while the interior must be leather and also black as well.
High-end sports vehicles such as Lamborghinis would fall in this category, however the majority of vehicles utilized in Uber Lux are luxury 4-doors, such as Jaguar XJ’s, Bentleys, and some Tesla models. If you have a luxury vehicle with only 2-doors you may still qualify, but you will need to contact Uber directly with the specific year, make, and model to ensure that it meets strict Uber Lux qualifications.
In conclusion: Aside from Uber Lux, your vehicle must have 4 doors
As you can see, Uber has a number of programs which can accommodate recent vehicles of many makes and models. Unless your 2-door is a high-end luxury sports model, however, it is unlikely that you will qualify to provide Uber service.
The final word will come from Uber, of course, so if you believe that your vehicle is of sufficient caliber to provide service under one of the categories that we’ve listen then be sure to contact them directly. Who knows? Your ride might just be the exception to the rule!
